Skype for Web announced
Users have been begging for a way to use Skype from the browser for a long time. We thought our prayers had been answered when we saw the feature come to Outlook.com, but the service was far from perfect and needed a lot of work.
Time passed, and with it our hopes died down, but now Skype is giving us a better way to use Skype without having to download the full program. Skype for Web is set to work straight from the web, without OutLook.com. It will operate straight from Skype.com.
The web app is in beta, so you may find some issues from time to time. In addition, you will need a plug-in, but that is temporary, until the WebRTC version is available. Skype for Web should be rolling out “in the coming weeks”, so keep your eyes open for it.
Opinion: I just have to wonder if this will work with Chromebooks. Maybe not with a required plug-in, but once the WebRTC version comes around there should be no reason why Skype for Web doesn’t play nicely with Chrome OS devices.
